[Taiwan] Taoyuan Airport: tips for layover

Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan is one of the few airports which offers the full accommodations for free for travelers who need a layover at the airport. As many airlines are providing cheap flights to/from Taipei at nighttime (like arrival at midnight or departure at 3am), these accommodations are very helpful, especially for budget travelers. This post will show you how to find and use them.

I. After arriving:

1. Shower rooms:

If you arrive by night, you may want to freshen yourself before taking any bus or taxi to the city. Luckily, the shower facilities in Taoyuan Airport are totally free and easy to find.

a. If you come to the airport just to transfer to another flight (and will not pass the immigration), you will find the shower rooms on the way to your gate, just keep checking the signs hanging from the ceiling. In order to use the showers, you will need to register and show your tickets at the counter outside the room (in Terminal 2, it’s the counter of a restaurant). I couldn’t use the room because I didn’t transfer, but judging by the size of the door, I assumed it was quite spacious. And I have read that it will offer you 15 min of hot water (which is quite plenty, I think).

b. After going through immigration, at the baggage claim area you will find the shower rooms at the far end of your right. Again, follow the signs above your head.

There were two rooms inside, with space to put your luggage so don’t worry of it getting wet. They were kept clean every time since the cleaning staff came and checked very often.  One of them tried to communicate with me (in Chinese, and I could only guess what she said) and asked me about the condition of the bath. Oh I was totally satisfied!
Here you can use the hot water as long as you want. But please remember that other people may need to use them as well, so try to finish as soon as possible.

They offer:
– Shampoo & bath gel
– Hair dryer
– Hot water

You prepare:
– Hair conditioner & facial cleanser (recommended)
– Bath tower

2. Sleeping lounges:

At night, you can lie down and take a rest pretty much everywhere in Taoyuan Airport. Moreover, they also have lounges with nice and soft sofas and places to charge your electric devices. Some places are with the light on every time, some places are darker, you can choose where you find more comfortable or safer. So, eye shades are recommended to bring along. Ear plugs as well, if you want a total silence (but actually I’ve never heard any loud noise there).

The airport can be cold at night so don’t forget to bring your coat or blanket. The security here is quite good, with officers patrolling every time, so I suppose there is no need to worry too much about your belongings. Anyway, better stay alert if possible.

3. Phone charging:

You can charge your phone everywhere, at the lounges, waiting rooms, bathrooms/toilets… Note that their socket is the flat type, with voltage: 110-120 Volts (same as Japan) so don’t forget to bring adapter if yours is different.

4. Food and drink supplies:

Unfortunately, restaurants and stores are closed at night, so your only choice to buy food and drink is the convenience store on B1. They don’t accept payment by card so don’t forget to bring cash with you.

And, you can find water machines in the hall or even in bathrooms/toilets.

II. Before departing:

1. Shower rooms:

There is no shower rooms outside baggage check, so if you want to use them, you’ll have to check in, take your flight tickets and get through the baggage check as soon as possible. Based on my latest experience, I could say that it’s not impossible. I spent my time chatting with my friend until the queue got really short, but finished the procedure at 12:10 while the boarding time was 1:20. Plenty of time.

The rooms are on 3F.

2. Sleeping lounges:

Very nice and comfortable sleeping spaces are waiting for you on 2F, outside baggage check, so you can take your time to rest a bit while waiting for check-in.

You can find the spaces at both end of 2F, and both of them are relatively dark. Please keep in mind the spaces are limited but the number of layover travelers is big, so if you want a good spot, you’d better get there early.

It’s pretty much all I can advice you. Have a nice layover at Taoyuan Airport. ^^
